What to expect at a dental check-up

A dental check-up is a chance to discuss your oral health and have your teeth and gums examined. Visits differ depending on your concerns, history and what the dentist finds.

You may be asked about pain, sensitivity, medicines and relevant health changes. Tell the dentist what matters to you, including any worries about treatment or previous dental experiences.

After the examination, the dentist can explain their findings and discuss whether any follow-up or treatment is recommended. You can ask about the reason for a recommendation, available alternatives, timing and costs before making decisions.

Bring a list of questions and the names of medicines you take if that is helpful. If you are visiting about a specific symptom, note when it began and what makes it better or worse.
