Teeth whitening: what to know before you begin

Tooth colour varies naturally, and stains can have different causes. A dental assessment can help determine whether whitening is suitable and what kind of change may be realistic for you.

Before whitening, a dentist should check your teeth and gums and discuss your goals, dental history and any existing sensitivity. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten in the same way as natural teeth, which may affect planning.

Ask which options are appropriate, how to use them safely, what temporary sensitivity may feel like and when to stop and seek advice. Avoid unverified products or methods that promise dramatic results without a dental assessment.

Whitening is a personal choice, not a substitute for treating a dental problem. If you have pain, decay or gum concerns, those should be discussed with a dentist first.
