Caring for your child's teeth

Helping children build a regular brushing routine is a practical first step for everyday oral health. Younger children often need an adult to guide or finish brushing, and the right support changes as they grow.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and age-appropriate toothpaste as advised by your dentist. Encourage children to spit rather than swallow toothpaste, and ask your dentist how much to use for your child's age.

Water is a good everyday drink between meals. Frequent sugary snacks and drinks can increase the risk of tooth decay, so keep them occasional and include tooth-friendly choices in the routine.

A dental visit can help answer questions about brushing, diet and your child's teeth. If your child has pain, swelling or an injury, contact a dental professional for advice rather than waiting for a routine check-up.
