Bleeding gums: when to get dental advice

Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing are worth paying attention to. Plaque around the gumline is one possible contributor, but bleeding can have other causes too, so it should not be self-diagnosed.

Continue gentle daily cleaning with a soft toothbrush rather than avoiding the area. If bleeding keeps happening, your gums look swollen, or you notice persistent bad breath or tenderness, arrange a dental assessment.

At a visit, the dentist can examine your gums, ask about your cleaning routine and health history, and explain any recommended care. Treatment depends on the findings and may include tailored cleaning guidance.

Contact a dental professional promptly if bleeding is heavy, does not settle, or occurs with significant pain or swelling. A website cannot determine the cause of gum symptoms for an individual patient.
